When visiting Rome in Nov. 2000 we saw a large freestanding mask. Does anyone know what this is?

I think you saw the sculpture of Igor Mitoraj.

It's on piazza Montegrappa, on the lungotevere.

That ';sculpture'; has been placed there just to reskill that little square and the near district, because of the Finmeccanica new head office just in front of that piazza.

In the link below you will find others Mitoraj's sculptures. Masks. All his sculptures are masks. Freestanding, lying down or broken... but just masks.

In my opinion that sculpture is useful and frightening... But if they wanted so...

I'm so sorry for my english, but I did my best!
